IGE 121
Rationalism, Revelation, and Enlightenment: The Ancient World
5*****
Pros: very friendly, polite, intelligent, funny
Cons: 8 AM classes are too early..
I've had Andy twice (IGE 120 and IGE 121). he's super nice and funny, and he has plenty of interesting stories to tell. class discussions tend to take a tangent, but that's how you get to bond with your classmates. he gives at least 1 or 2 reading responses every week, but none of them should be a surprise to you because he gives a very detailed, structured syllabus during the first class of the quarter. i personally love andy and am sad that i can't take him next quarter. if you ever get the chance to take his class, do it!

Andy, as he likes to be called, is a new ige professor! I took him last quarter for IGE 220 and i'm currently taking him for IGE 221. He is really friendly and likes to hear student's ideas, opinions, thoughts, whatever you want to call them. He's a fair grader just like any other IGE professor but really it isn't hard to get an A in this class; he knows his stuff and is willing to help you in whatever you need. One thing I really like about him, is that he gives you his home phone so that you can reach him even when you are home and do not understand something. Regular ige professor: reading responses as they pertain to the readings, group presentation (not hard), 2 essays, and of course, the in-class group discussions! Every thing you would have in any other IGE class but with a really nice and friendly professor! Grade Received: A-

Pros: He is the funniest teacher ever! His lectures are interesting, though they do go off on a tangent. i love this class :) The reading responses aren't that difficult and there are no quizzes as im sure you've heard. The essays and group things tend to go off too, but they end up back. i would definitely recommend taking him! i'm even taking him for 121! :)
Cons: He likes to let us just do things on our own, so we get off topic easily. If you're okay with that, like i am, cool :)

IGE 122
Authority and Faith: Medieval and Renaissance
5*****
Pros: ~extremely kind person

~loves his students

~very reasonable & accommodating

~set schedule so you know what to do
Cons: ~lots of discussion, can be a pro if your into that lol

~takes attendance

~class rarely ends early
I have taken Andy for all 3 IGE 120 courses this year, without a doubt there isn't a better prof than him. Class gets more and more boring as you get to the end of the series but he tries his best to keep the class engaged with discussion and activities. you can't go wrong taking him, trust. Honestly, I think he's too nice to his students. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, I wish he taught classes other than IGE though, like I said it gets really really boring. if you want to take IGE, take Andy or else, ya played yourself.

IGE 121
Rationalism, Revelation, and Enlightenment: The Ancient World
5*****
Pros: -excellent professor

-very understanding

-easy grader

-keeps the class discussions going on

-allows for 1 late RR w/o reason but usually allows you to turn in your RRs if you have a valid reason.

Cons: -readings are awfully boring

-keeps us till the end of the class

-very specific on what he wants in the RRs
class is pretty much based on the RR's, 2 papers, 1 group project,1 individual project, portfolio. class participation plays little to no role in your grade.

I had 3 missing RR's, a 5 on first paper, a 6 on second paper, and a 6- on project. I ended up with an A- in the class. Do well on the papers and you'll be guaranteed an A.

Pros: Great guy, really loves the subject
Cons: none, he is all around the best prof. i have had a cal poly
I have had Andy for 5 straight quarters now and thats not by accident. He is a Burlesque comedian who really has a passion for what he is teaching and i always have a great time in his classes. Im sad i don't get to take him for 222. All in all, if you have the opportunity to take ANY of his classes, don't think twice, DO IT.

Davis is a great teacher to take. He cares about the class, but at the same time doesn't take it overly seriously. Everything is straight forward and he isn't a hard grader. Easy enough to get an A

Andy is a really great professor. I actually took him for my first IGE classes, and I wish I can take his class again for the third one. He's funny and nice with his grading. He says he doesn't really check for grammar; he mostly checks for your thoughts and whether or not he can understand what you write. I did not like the course's subjects this time, but Andy cannot do anything about that. If anything, he made the class more bearable. Like the last class, you have to write a big formal paper. Personally, I think his grading got tougher, but I'm not completely sure about that judgement. This class is definitely tougher than the last one if you don't like speaking about religion because the entire class is based on religion. You get to talk about your religion and beliefs, but I found it tougher since I don't really follow a religion. This class definitely makes you think more in depth than the previous class. The class has you do a group project AND an individual project. You have to write an essay for both of them, and they're both due in the same week. I actually started considering dropping IGE because it had too much work. Andy's a great professor, and if you need to take this class, take it with Andy. It's a lot of work, but you can't escape that.

Pros: Awesome personality

Very talkative and natural

Interesting life and stories

Open to criticism

Class is almost purely discussion

Homework, while assigned almost every meeting, is pretty easy

All around great guy that just wants to spread some knowledge
Cons: Grading can be a little harsh. He notices EVERYTHING on some papers, and next to nothing on others

Essays and the group project were not easy but not impossible, either
Gotta love Doc! He did an excellent job of helping us integrate into college, giving his students a place to talk and feel free without persecution. The class is all about discussing assigned reading, which is never more than 30-50 minutes of reading. You can ask any question you want, and state virtually whatever you want, so long as it adds to the class in some way shape or form.

There is a reason his classes fill up first--He really does a great job of not being a typical lecturer, but will foster conversation in the class and do whatever he can to get everyone participating and comfortable. He is an amazing professor, and I can't wait to have him again next quarter--and for as long as I possibly can!

Pros: - Group discussions are the best because you're talking about a topic while learning while wasting time and he has no problem with that

-VERY lenient

- Homework is usually a 1 page essay about a book you read

- Actually grades papers with helpful hints

- Some activities can give you a perfect score on the homework
Cons: - Some discussions are very boring and he has NO problem repeating the same questions over and over in order to get the group to speak up.

- There will be a lack of motivation to do homework
-Very easy to fall behind because of how easy the class can be, but do not slack because you receive only one grade ate the end of the quarter and it's a cumulative grade based off of homework + projects + papers

- Put in about 70% of effort in the class, final grade was a B+

Andy is a really nice and funny professor. He tries to keep the discussion going throughout the entire class. Personally, I don't like that, but the class is supposed to have a lot of discussions. He has you write a reading response after every class with the exception on the day an essay is due. If you really want to aim for a check plus on your reading response, relate the reading to yourself and past readings. He has you write one formal essay around five pages long. You have to work on a group project that is relatable to the course's themes, and you have to write an essay for that project, discussing how your project is related to the themes. Overall, he's a great professor, and you should take his class if you can. Grade received: A-

I was in Andy's class with Stephen as they co-teach the class.

From what I've gathered, Stephen was a bit more strict on the guidelines and such, whereas Andy was fairly laid-back.

What you heard from others are true. You are allowed to miss up to three Reading Responses without any consequences and the class itself focuses on discussion about IGE theme with history and religion.

Andy is very open-minded and like us, he is still learning from others' experiences. Ultimately, when I received a B+ for my grade, he was the one who responded to me and changed it to an A-, whereas Stephen said he'll get back to me after talking with Andy, but never did.

Andy's really cool and friendly, im sure hes really smart. i dont really know about his teaching, our discussions cling on a tangent to our topic, i mean thats cool sometimes, but you know i want to talk about some serious issues, not what this one person had for lunch or "this one time..." whatever this one person did. Thats why i didnt talk that much/at all in my class and thats why, i bet, i got a B+. First one for my entire IGE, so, i would say, the way he regulates his class makes it way different. if you guys LOVE to talk about life and stuff, this is the class for you. Grade Received: B+

Pros: It's Davis.

Allows 3 "byes" so you don't have to do three RRs, but will consider extra ones as extra credit.
Cons: You're lame if you don't take Davis.
He's a funny guy who keeps the conversation going for class. He's not teaching 122, so this is my last quarter with him. He's one of the best IGE professors in the program. At the end of the quarter, he writes down our feedback for the class and wants to make it more manageable for his students.

He comments on your RRs to help give feedback to improve.

I'll miss his class.

Pros: -Encourages good conversation

- Friendly

- Fair
Cons: - Obscure grading system

Davis is a very theatrical professor. I took IGE 121 in a combined class so we had two professors and Davis was definitely the better of the two. He is a fair grader and gives a moderate amount of homework and a few essays but encourages critical and deep thinking through the texts from the class. His grades on a check/check plus system but rarely gives check pluses. He saves them for the most thought provoking and most critical thinking papers.
